Baby development milestones by month
Every baby develops at their own pace. Milestones are a map of what tends to come next — a reference to enjoy, not a test to pass.
Broad milestones
- 0–3 months: follows faces, smiles, holds head up, coos.
- 4–6 months: rolls over, reaches for toys, babbles.
- 7–9 months: sits without support, starts to crawl.
- 10–12 months: pulls to stand, first steps for some.
- 1–2 years: walking, first sounds and words, simple play.
A guide, not a grade: ranges are wide. If something worries you, your pediatrician is the best person to ask.
Growth spurts
Around certain weeks, babies often feed more, sleep less predictably and seem fussier for a few days — usually just before a leap in skills.
